So, I had to give a presentation to my NU552 class and it
bombed. Maybe I am exaggerating,
but only slightly. The version of
my presentation that was uploaded onto BB was not the final one, many slides
were missing and there was no pretty PowerPoint theme. (Fortunately, I had the foresight to
print some extra handouts with the current slides on them) The good version that the class
didn’t see was on my professor’s laptop that I couldn’t use for the class
because my notes were on them. If
only I had the foresight to print those notes for myself! All the interesting ad-libs and
side notes, you know, the zingers
that I had practiced at home I had forgotten. The icing on the cake came at the end when I was reading my
case studies. My hands were behind
my back and I was fumbling with my bead bracelet. It broke, I heard a bead bounce and hit the floor, then
another. I was afraid to move my
hands, for fear that the whole bracelet would come crashing down on the floor,
but had to because I had to advance to the next slide. This was not one of the finer moments
in my personal academic history.
However the day wasn’t a total loss. I had some really great news earlier that day that overrode my disastrous presentation. My paper is going to be published!
In June I attended a conference of Wound Ostomy Continence
Nurses in Orlando Florida. The
editor of the Journal of Wound Ostomy & Continence (JWOCN for short) was
lecturing about the value of certification and mentioned the future of the
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and what that would mean to WOCN
practice. I had written a paper
for my WOCN classes on what a DNP would mean for a future WOCN, so after class
I mentioned it to him. He said,
“please send it to me.” No,
I don’t like it, I had so many problems with it, he said he didn’t care, just
send it and they will work with it.
So I did, and this many months later, I found out just before my class
that my paper was accepted and it will be in the March 2009 issue.
I haven’t received my final grade for the presentation yet, and that is okay.
I have a little idea about the Journal of Wound Ostomy & Continence. I would like to attend in one of their conference too.

It's never as much of a disaster as you think it is! But now you know why speakers shouldn't rely on PowerPoint as their notes; technology is too unpredictable and you never know what's going to happen.
Here's a post that you might find interesting about PowerPoint and notes:
