Internships

Well, I'm going to keep this quick, because I am absolutely exhausted!  I started my internship this week at HDNews, which is a high definition news channel within the News12/Cablevision network-- a huge television company based in Long Island.  I believe News12 also services Hudson Valley, Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, New Jersey, and Connecticut as well as Nassau and Suffolk... so if you're from the area, you've probably heard of it.  It's really exciting to be actually working in a newsroom-- the environment is easy-going and friendly, but fast-paced at the same time, and I know that I'll be getting a real hands-on education as an intern there.  And the best part is that I got the internship through Sacred Heart, so I know there will be no problem getting credit for the work that I complete this summer (once I fill out the paperwork, of course.  There's always paperwork...).  I actually met my contact for News12 while I was reporting on Career Development's Annual Spring Internship and Career Fair (if you go to these links: Spring Career Fair this Tuesday... and Record Turnout for Spring Career Fair... you can find the articles I wrote and more information!).  I wasn't expecting to find a job or anything-- I was just trying to find some good quotes to feature in the article. But I brought my resume just in case, and then I met Jennifer from News12, and she told me that she could help me out with scheduling an interview if I was really interested.  So I went for an interview, and here I am!  Plus I'm working with one of my friends, Joe, from SHU as well-- he spoke to Jennifer at the Career Fair as well.   I'll be talking more about it later-- for now, it's bed, because I have HDNews in the morning!

Summer Vacation?

"Man is made so he can only find relaxation from one kind of labor by taking up another"

If that's true then I guess I've already replaced books and studying with serving juice and smoothies...
What a busy week!  My mind still hasn't settled into "vacation" mode, but that could have something to do with the fact that I haven't stopped moving since I got home two weeks ago.  I've been so caught up with downsizing the amount of clothes and stuff I brought home from school (you really accumulate a lot!) and working full time at the juice bar-- I barely had time to even sign on to the computer (that's unusual for me, if you were wondering).  I couldn't believe my eyes when I signed onto my email account and found that I had over seventy new emails!  I enjoyed seeing the emails about graduation-- the university sent out links to slide shows from the commencement ceremony and I was excited to see a few of my friends in there.  If you want to check them out, just click on the link here: http://www.sacredheartphotos.com/commencement2008/ .  I'll miss my friends who graduated, and it's sad that they're leaving SHU, but it's also so exciting to hear about all of their plans for the future-- whether it's a job, or continuing on to Graduate school.

It's late... so I better get to bed-- Memorial Day weekend is just one big tourist-y weekend for Long Island which means that the small tourist town I work in will be swarming with people tomorrow (I need all the patience and energy I can get)-- I'm just glad I don't work in the Hamptons!  On a lighter note, I'm super excited to see the new Indiana Jones movie after I get out of work tomorrow :) One good reason to love Memorial Day weekend-- the movies!

Testing, testing... shake it up!

“Most people don't know there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don't get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.” – Brian Andreas, www.storypeople.com

Hey! So I’m really excited to be starting up my blog as one of the student SHUbloggers… I thought I would start off with a nice little quote up there from this cool website I found.  As a lover of words in general, I love quotes and I enjoy finding ones that fit exactly how I’m feeling at a certain moment in time.  And with the recent change of scenery in my own life, I definitely feel like somebody is shaking things up and making sure I’m not sleeping through my summer vacation!

I left Sacred Heart a week ago, barely two hours after my last final (British literature—and I’m still crossing my fingers waiting for that grade haha) and yet my room is still filled with boxes and suitcases filled with clothes, books, etc.  I guess it hasn’t really sunk in yet that I’m going to be home for another four months, but I’m working on getting everything unpacked.  It’s great being home again; I missed all of my Long Island friends and my family.  This summer I’m a supervisor at a local ice cream/smoothie/juice store, so I jumped right back into working this week, and I’ve already hit all of my regular hangouts with my friends: Starbucks, Applebees, and (best of all) my living room couch.  Slowly but surely, I’m working my way back into a routine again—the transition between college and home again is tough!

I’m realizing exactly what I take for granted while I’m at school.  We don’t have the same independence at home, even over small things like what time dinner is eaten. At SHU, I can walk down to the dining hall and eat dinner at 4:30 if I wanted to, or wait until 7:45, but at home, dinner is when Mom says so.  And having to share a computer with three other people is completely different from having my own laptop.  SHU students get to keep their school issued laptop computers over the summer, as long as they’re registered for the fall semester, but I really miss the wireless internet that we use all over campus!!! It only takes a few seconds to sign into the network, and the internet is available to students and staff all over campus.  It’s really easy for me to check my email while I’m at practice in the Pitt Center, or to show my friends a picture on Facebook in the Mahogany Room.  But at home, we don’t have a wireless network, so I have to wait my turn on the family PC. I’m pretty spoiled, huh? lol.

Another thing I miss is seeing my friends everyday! I loved living with my roommate and nine other girls in Christian Witness Commons, and it’s so strange going to sleep without somebody else in the room.  After my first night at home, my roommate and I complained to each other on AIM how hard it was to fall asleep in an empty room.  Plus, some of my best friends at school are several hundred miles away, instead of just a few rooms down—I can’t walk down the hall to get their advice or ask them what movie they want to see this weekend!

But I guess that’s what I’m trying to say with the quote—every time you get too comfortable in one place, someone shakes things up for you to make sure you’re not sleeping through life!!!  It makes me appreciate what I have at school as well as at home—and it makes me that much more excited to put summer break into full swing!  I can’t wait for late-night bonfires with my high school friends, busy nights working in Port Jefferson, and starting my internship at News12 (I’ll tell you more about that later).  For now though, it’s probably best to get to sleep for an early start tomorrow…
