I think the best of Sacred Heart University was on display this week as members of our community gathered in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. We met for our annual interfaith service of thanksgiving with representatives invited from the Jewish and Muslim faiths. We prayed the psalms together, and Dr. John Michniewicz did his usual fine work with the Liturgical Choir and our cantor, Allegra De Vita. As I looked at the sanctuary from my pew in the rear of the Chapel, I was impressed that people took the time from their busy day to participate in this service – and to fill the area surrounding the altar with boxes upon boxes of food for the St. Charles Food Pantry in Bridgeport. I’m told our generous donations will feed 500 families in the area this Thanksgiving.
Our basketball season got underway this month with great energy. The women’s team beat St. Peter’s by a resounding 65 to 48 in their season opener. While the men weren’t so lucky – they fell to Fairfield University in the first game of the Connecticut 6 Classic and then to UMass – we hope to report their first win by the time of my next blog. (No pressure, guys.) The Connecticut 6 Classic opened the season for six of the state’s hoops teams playing at the Mohegan Sun. Several hundred fans including a large number of alumni from the Class of 2005 made their way for the six games on November 13th.
I had the pleasure this week of hosting nine colleagues from the College of Education and Health Professions. Great thanks to Anne Barker, who had bid on a special meal prepared by the president to support the College’s IFUN – the Incidental Fund for Undergraduate Nurses. This special reserve account is available to assist nursing students with one-time emergency expenses and was created by Professor Emerita of Nursing, Dr. Connie Young. Fortunately, Chartwells let me borrow a chef’s jacket so I could try to really impress this great team of nursing faculty with a nice home-cooked Italian meal. I’m happy to think that everyone seemed to have a great time. I know I did.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving.
