As I have begun packing and processing all of the thoughts and feelings about studying abroad in Berlin, my mind is filled with excitement, a little bit of nerves, and a fascination of all the new people and places I am about to explore. Now with only about 24 hours left before my adventure begins, it is becoming more and more real that I am leaving.
I am leaving a few things behind as I make this journey across the ocean to Germany. Of course my family consisting of my Mom, Dad, and older sister, as well as the rest of my family. Oh and can't forget the three dogs, Shadow, Marley, and my sister's dog Huck. Just the same as any other person I will leave behind many great friends and unfortunately miss some things like graduations and holidays. I leave also behind me the bar and restaurant that I work at. This past week has been crazy as not only the people I work with but also the regular customers and other people from my small town share their own experiences abroad with me and also wish me luck.
One of the hardest decisions I had to make deciding to study in Berlin was to leave my sailing team for a season. I joined Sacred Heart's sailing team only a year or two in its development; this was my freshmen year in 2013. The team was being led by Sophomore, Brian Reilly, who we quickly became close friends and started on our conquest to build a team. Now accepting the privilege of helping run and develop a team is something I am very grateful for and have taken a lot of pride in over the past 3 years. I depart the team for there Spring season (which is fairly short and wicked cold), and leave my teammates and my right hand man to brave the conditions without me. I wish them all the best of luck this season and wish I could be there.
I have made a lot of friends at Sacred Heart over the years. I have met many great people and shared many memories and experiences. My Professors I have had over this time at Sacred Heart have helped me develop much in to what I am today and I am excited to bring this energy to Germany. My time over there I plan on immersing myself into the different cultures and meeting all new people. I am going to use this time to experience new things and expand my education. I am so excited for this new opportunity, I can't even comprehend it!
