Hello from the road!
This is a unique time of year for the Admissions Office - we counselors are out "on the road" visiting your high schools, attending college fairs, and meeting our future Class of 2015! We spend a lot of time at gas stations, Panera Breads, and high school parking lots, but all to usher you lovely students into the application process! Welcome!
To the high school Seniors, we know how overwhelemed you might be feeling! As soon as your applications are out, you'll feel a lot better! That's when we park our cars for the winter and start reading your applications, essays, recommendations, etc. It's also when you form a close friendship with your mail man/woman...in the mean time, we invite you to VISIT CAMPUS! We have Open House THIS SATURDAY October 30th! It's going to be a great chance to tour the campus, hear from students and faculty, and really envision yourself at SHU. You're choosing a home for the next four years, and we are opening our doors to show you what we're all about! Even if you visited over the summer, it's a great idea to see the school when it is bustling with students. Try the food; ask a random student about their experiences. One of my favorite parts about SHU is the energy on campus. SHU is well-known for its smiling faces, red SHU gear, and welcoming community. Check us out!
To any Juniors, you're in a great place to start touring! Don't leave it all for the summer, for that same reason - you want to be able to gauge the atmosphere on campus. There's no time like the present with our many opportunities to visit. Come catch a football game! The Boys of Fall have a few home games left - click over to our Athletics page and come support!
No matter where you are in the college process, the best thing you can do is get to know us, your Admissions Counselors. We all represent a particular territory, so we'll likely visit your high school or a local college fair. Introduce yourself, set-up an interview, or reach out in some way. When we go to read your application, we already have a rapport established with you that provides great framework for decision-making. Further, we know our stuff! We are an office full of knowledgable professionals, many are even alumni! We are happy to point you in the right direction, answer your questions, or facilitate meetings with various departments on campus you might want to get in touch with.In the wise words of Jerry Maguire, "help me help you"!
To the parent-readers, well, if the kids are stressed, we imagine you are too! This can be a nerve-wracking time, so always feel free to call or email us with your questions. We try to meet with you after we interview your student to answer any questions you might have. I remember how my mom was when I first applied to SHU (Early Decision...just saying), she was so nervous! By the time my brother went through the process, I don't think we blinked an eye! Keep visiting, keep a check-list, and keep sane!
To EVERYONE, talk to your friends! Do you know someone who went to SHU last year? How are they liking it? I've met so many Boston students this year with friends at SHU that are just loving life here! Those students are a wonderful resource: they're from your home area, they know you, they know SHU! I am happy to report that all of the 2014 students I worked with last year have given great feedback to the high schools I'm visiting. It's so great to hear that they are so happy and catch a glimpse of them running toward the football game or Bingo! Yes, that's right. We love Bingo at SHU. If you haven't visited, you are missing out on the stories!
