Hello from a snowy CT!
What a winter we've had! I suppose from an Admissions standpoint, it's been good that we are couped up inside so we can read all of your applications! Hats off to all of our applicants this year as you've contributed to our most competitive pool in university history! A warm welcome to any of our Early Decision students that have enrolled. Welcome to the SHU Family!
I think at this time of year an important quote to keep in mind is
"College is a match to be made not a prize to be won".
As many of you stalk the mailman waiting for decisions (and we can hardly blame you as we were 17 once, some more recently than others), remember those words! As the decision letters trickle in over the next few months, there is an interesting paradigm shift. All fall, we present our school to you via travel, but truly you put your best foot forward asking for candidacy.
Once you're accepted to your schools, it's your job to do the scouting! As I've written in many past blogs, you need to be picky in selecting your school. To get more specific though, this is a great time to really put your prospective colleges to the test. What are you looking for in a college? How are your colleges catering to your needs? At SHU, we love to put you in contact with whatever departments we can to help better connect you to the university. If you're thinking about a Club Sport, visit our website and contact the coach: Club Sports. If you're looking into Theater, Choral, or Band, check out our Arts page: Arts.
As always, we love to hear from you!
Most recently, Jodi Picoult visited campus which drew quite the crowd to SHU! Attended by mostly females: students, mothers, and students' mother's book clubs, Jodi presented mainly on the research that her books require. Two things she said stuck out to me. One was regarding the full-time job of a writer. She explained that rather than wait for a muse, she writes each day. "Somedays you write beautifully and other days you write trash. But you sit down and you write because you can edit trash but you can't edit a blank page." The second quote came when Jodi was asked by an audience member how she manages to evoke such strong emotion from her readers: "To be honest, I don't care what you think! Truly, I'm so lucky that you like my books, but I write them for me and I think that's why they have the effect they do, because my focus is not on your reaction." (paraphrased). What a character! And she has a point. Her presentation was very well received at Sacred Heart!
Well for any of you who might be totally uninterested in Jodi (you should try her books, they're awesome), you might be glad to hear Travis Roy will be visiting SHU as a part of our Lecture Series! Further, Kid Cudi will be performing at our Spring Concert. That ought to cover all the bases!
That's all for now. Safe driving in the snow - bust out those sleds! For those of you reading from warm climates, well I'm just jealous!
