The College Visit

Campus has emptied out...or not!

For our rising high school Seniors, you might be just starting to visit colleges. Once you do your homework, you can narrow down a list of schools to visit. The visit is the most important search process you will have as you look at schools! Though I always recommend a student returns when school is in session to get a true idea of the campus life, a visit during the summer is both convenient and informative! It is also a great time to meet your Admissions Counselor - we are here!

Here at SHU, we are offering information sessions, tours, and interviews to visitors. Make sure that if you want an interview, you schedule in advance and come prepared! Our interviews are conversational, but you want to make your best impression! Bring questions, resumes, transcripts, or any other materials to represent you!

Our summer tour guides are a very select group on campus that are very excited to meet you! They love SHU so much they decided to spend the summer here (and I'm sure our beach proximity had nothing to do with it!). Check out our website for tour dates and registration.

Like most colleges in the summer, SHU is performing a bit of construction. All campus facilities are still fully functioning; you will just bear witness to the final months of construction on our new building, The Student Commons! We are excited to present this new building to our incoming Freshmen!

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end...

With springtime's sun and rain comes much joy and pain! As we watch our teary-eyed Seniors say goodbye, we wait for our new Freshmen class to come meet for the first time at Orientation.

Our Seniors are experiencing many "lasts" as they head into Senior Week. During Senior Week, students move back into their Freshmen dorms and enjoy one last week of graduation festivities together! It is amazing to see how far our students have come. Today I spoke with a student off to Korea before June even starts to teach English for one year. Last week, I spoke with a friend relocating to New York for law school. SHU students are doing big things! 98% of our students go straight to graduate school and/or jobs, so we are proud of our graduates.

On the other end of the spectrum, our incoming Freshmen are beginning to register for Orientation. They are also joining the Admitted Students Group Class of 2015 on Facebook, so join if you haven't yet! Orientation can be a bit nerve-racking to attend, but our Orientation Leaders have created such a fun weekend that our Freshmen will be counting the days to Move-In Day! Soon after Orientation, students will pair up using our state-of-the-art assignment website, Roommate Click. Information will be reaching you soon in case you're wondering!

One great way to continue to break the ice before Freshman Year is to peruse our Pre-Fall programs. You'll hear more at Orientation, but feel free to check it out now: Pre Fall Programs at SHU. These programs are a great way to get started a little earlier. I participated in Community Connections and found it the perfect way to get acclimated to campus a bit earlier, and make forty friends before even starting my academic year at SHU. It certainly took some of the nerves out of that first walk down the hallway when I had familiar faces smiling at me!

No matter how you decide to approach Orientation and Freshman year, just make sure you do it with an open mind! Do not seek an exact replica of your high school experience and do not hide in your dorm room! Everyone is a little uncomfortable at first, but embrace the many opportunities in our clubs, club sports, sports games, and Freshman Welcome Days. Have fun! (And do your homework, don't forget to follow your syllabus!).
