Professor Jerry Reid was a recent guest lecturer and seminar leader at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was invited to participate in a summer seminar on "Culture and Leadership" for second- and third-year cadets taught by Professor Clementine Fujimura and Commander David Smith. The seminar focuses on understanding and appreciating cultural diversity and is part of the training for cadets who desire leadership positions at home and abroad.
As part of the seminar, the students are spending a week on the Mohawk reserve of Akwesasne (New York and Ontario/Quebec, Canada). Akwesasne is one of the communities that has been the focus of Reid’s research on cultural and political revitalization in Iroquois communities. He had the chance to share his findings on the Iroquois culture and society with the cadets as part of their preparation for the field experience in Kahnawake.
