According to the results in the E-Expectations 2010 report, a study sponsored by Noel-Levitz, OmniUpate and the National Research Center for College & University Admissions, the more than 1,000 college-bound students surveyed indicate that a school's website is a critical tool in determining their college selection process.
Download the full report here: E-Expectations 2010 report. In a nutshell, here is a summary of the survey conclusions:
- Recognize that your external website is your number one recruitment marketing tool
- Make content on academics and cost to attend detailed and easy to find
- Give students an easy way to estimate their cost of attending, right on your site (Note: The U.S. federal goverment has mandated that all U.S. college and universities provide a net price calculator on their web sites by fall 2011)
- Supplement your official content with unofficial social media content
- Consider setting up your own private social networking site
- Focus your social media efforts on the channels that will have the greatest enrollment impact
- Unmask secret shoppers through e-mail
- Explore your competition the way students would
Another important factor to consider is the way student's are accessing a website. The report indicates that 23% of students are using their smartphones (i.e., iPhone, Android, and Blackberry) to access school websites. According to Mark Greenfield, Director of Web Services at State University of New York at Buffalo, "The era of the mobile web is on the horizon and something we all should be preparing for. The move to mobile represents a complete paradigm shift that be the most significant change since the introduction of the browser."
While content is a critical component of a college website, interactive features such as video, online catalogs and forms, virtual tours and of course, social media, play an integral role in a student's website experience.
As technology evolves, our students' online behaviors will evolve, and it is our job as higher education professionals to keep up!!
