Recently a local University experienced an intense outbreak of "Norovirus" a gastro intestinal virus. As cases became more and more prevalent, the student health services department in combination with other university departments and the local health department went into medical mash mode. This is accomplished when you are providing hands on care and direction for source determination, containment and prevention tasks simultaneously.
While medical staffs were treating student symptoms, they were also investigating possible sources for the outbreak and minimizing further contact exposure to these germs.
Much of what they did was only half of what was needed yet was all of what the center is charged to do. The other half of the cure or suspension of transmission of this virus lies solely in the hands of the campus' main population. That's you; all our students, faculty and staff are and would be directed to participate in the following activities in the event of an occurrence on our campus of Norovirus.
1. Remain calm. Contact your health provider should you have symptoms of GI distress.
2. Keep it clean. That means everything; clean your home, apartment and/or dorm room.
3. Use disinfectants, once vomiting and diarrhea begin contaminants will be in even more locations.
Useful information for outbreaks and communicable diseases can be found on the CDC and State DPH websites, only "clicks" away is the information necessary to handle your worries and concerns.
